[edit] Purpose of meetings

The goal of these weekly meetings is to provide a real-life point of contact for protesters to co-ordinate activities related to the protest. Topics of discussion include advertisement and publicity, general rules and guidelines, protest timing, location, and logistics, and member recruitment. The organization of satellite events (i.e. sign-painting parties) also takes place at these meetings.

[edit] Notes

Some notable things discussed at this meeting:

  • Ideas and selections for flyers and other publicity materials should be prepared and brought in for next week's (February 23) meeting. The internet is an excellent source for these things. If an impressive piece of Chanology propaganda catches your eye, print it out and bring it in. If you have artistic talent, please try your hand at producing your own.
  • Cheap copy shops are being sought for the mass-printing of particularly effective flyers to hand out during the protest and to plaster public areas with. The distribution of the cost of such a print run was discussed. Pooling money from meeting attendees was suggested. Recommend continue this line of inquiry at next meeting.
  • Absentis mentioned that we are in contact with the Toronto protest group and may look to them for some of our flyer materials.
  • Location: Ottawa has Parliament Hill. We should evaluate the possiblity of protesting there.
  • Permits: Absentis is looking into obtaining federal protest permits to clear the way for us to protest on the Hill. Noted is the fact that an anti-war group may have the Hill on the same day as the March protest. DeSlymon will figure out how to obtain a municipal permit to legitimize our protest everywhere else in Ottawa.
  • Currently information about the protest is distributed between the wikidot page, a thread at Enturbulation, another website, and here. Meeting members expressed a wish to consolidate this information. This should begin ASAP.
  • Posters and flyers: schools and their residence buildings are a good place for publicity material. They are high-traffic and most passerby are our target audience. Members who attend the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, or Algonquin College should investigate the process for putting up posters in their buildings and dorms for next meeting
  • The Feb. 10 protest was recapped for people who did not attend.
    • Things that worked:
      • The general assembly; protesting was peaceful and organized
      • Most protesters followed the rules of engagement and were treated with respect by both law enforcement officials and passerby.
    • Things that could have worked better:
      • There were some non-anons who tried to join in on the protest. While encouraging, these people did more harm than good by being over-enthusiastically loud and boisterous. Next time, give them a flyer and tell them to either watch from the sidelines or go home.
      • The flyers produced for the protest were not of very high quality. While legible, they did little to give the impression of professionalism in our protest. Copy shops do accept print material in digital form. Try to get a good, high resolution version and use that as the basis for epic mass-printing.
      • Some hate signs were carried by protest members. Don't do that. Our goal is not to perpetuate hate, but to inform of and expose the Church's vile practices. Also, spreading hate publicly via a demonstration is a crime in Canada.
      • A member violated the rules of engagement #6 and #4 by going inside the Church of Scientology for part of the protest. Emphasis must be placed on obeying all the rules, else the Church may request The Law to shut us down.
      • Compared to protests in LA and London, we were quite subdued. Perhaps some preparation and rehearsal of cheers next time will change things.

[edit] Agenda

  • Check with Absentis and DeSlymon on the progress of obtaining permits for the March 15 protest
  • Review poster and flyer suggestions that people bring in. Update on availability of flyer material from Toronto.
  • Operation Party Hard briefing
    • Food: What types of pre-packaged foods are cheap and available, when/where to get them from. Discuss.
  • Look into obtaining a megaphone? Also, mobile stereo systems for the playing of music during Operation Party Hard.
    • Legal issues with playing said music?
  • Discuss possibility of Ottawa-specific raid - Ottawa's Co$ is holding LRH's birthday celebration the evening of March 22nd.
  • Party on the Hill: should we do it? Pros and cons. Conflicts with anti-war rally.
  • The bank we protest in front of will be open on Saturday. Discuss how banks don't like people in masks.

[edit] Notes

  • Permits: DeSlymon appears to have fallen off the face of the planet, but no matter. QED has taken up the responsibility of obtaining a municipal protest permit. He has sent submitted a request form to City Hall and is waiting for them to respond. Absentis has all the necessary information to obtain a federal protest permit should we ultimately decide to take our party to the Hill.
  • Publicity:
    • Viral advertising: Rage and dinoatemymom have access to card-printing services and will look into printing small cards adorned with "youfoundthecard.com". If this is a go, members agree to split the costs for printing.
    • Posters at schools: Absentis mentioned that his school, the University of Ottawa, has bilingualism requirements for posted materials. He'd also rather not work on postering his school but since nobody else at the meeting goes to U of O has said he will try. Dinoatemymom goes to both Algonquin College and Carleton University. He mentioned that he does not have a very good relationship with the students council of either school, so getting posters and flyers approved will be problematic. However, he will plaster areas of Carleton University that do not require approval.

[edit] Agenda

  • Discuss setting up a mechanism so that individuals who wish to donate to our cause may do so through our wiki.
  • Anonymous OttawaTM has obtained a permit for the use of Parliament Hill on April 12 from 10am-4pm. Discuss what the hell we'll do with it. EX Guest speakers, musics, political lobbying.
  • Discuss Applied Scholastics raid. There is an applied scholastics center in Ottawa. We need to warn the good people in and around that area that AS has links to a Dangerous CultTM. Corollary - Find or create a suitable poster to put up.
